Poetry In Any Language Is Beautiful – Wandrers Nachtlied II
Yesterday was a very interesting day. It started off as a crappy one. I’ve been trying hard to wake up early* (I’m convinced that waking up early is the solution to all my problems! ) but alas, I woke up only around 9. I couldn’t go running because I had experiments to run. So, I was feeling quite bummed out.
I had given up all hope of feeling good, till someone shared this poem with me. Just reading it, didn’t have any profound effect on me, but then I heard it being sung. Oh boy.. that suddenly caused my dampened spirit to soar. And soar it did..
|Wandrers Nachtlied II||Wayfarer’s Night Song II|
|Johann Wolfgang von Goethe||Prose Translation
by H. W. Longfellow
|Über allen Gipfeln||O’er all the hill-tops|
|Ist Ruh,||Is quiet now,|
|In allen Wipfeln||In all the tree-tops|
|Spürest du||Hearest thou|
|Kaum einen Hauch;||Hardly a breath;|
|Die Vögelein schweigen in Walde.||The birds are asleep in the trees.|
|Warte nur, balde||Wait; soon like these|
|Ruhest du auch.||Thou too shalt rest|
I wondered to myself – isn’t it amazing that we have the ability to “hear” emotions even in a foreign language ? Especially the part where Warte Nur.. (Just wait..) is repeated over and over.
Reminds me of a Bengali poem which had me hooked with its beautiful repetition of Bajre tomar baje bashi. You’ve probably heard it if you’ve seen the wherethehellismatt video. The poem is called Stream of Life and is from the Gitanjali by Rabindranath Tagore.
Is it just me, or do you also find songs which have poetic verses very appealing?
Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality. But, of course, only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things. ~T. S. Eliot
* I realize now maybe the trick is to sleep early. Sigh. If only I can convince myself that its cool to sleep at 11pm.
I have a new goal – to learn how to play the piano. Another goal before I graduate. Also to learn a bit about world history and different languages.
Also, I think its time to generalize this blog into other things that I learn/unlearn besides just about myself and my thoughts.
