Trick: Saving my advisor some money
I work in an experimental lab. And we build pretty much
all are equipment our entire experimental setup. In the last couple of years, I’ve gained a lot of experience on building experimental setups and have a fair idea about optics, electronics etc.
For a recent project that I’m working on, I needed some high quality optical posts (dampening posts as they dampen any mechanical vibrations). And new ones cost anywhere between 200 – 400$ (Newport, Thorlabs)
One thing I’ve learnt from my advisor is that one should be able to manage on a minimal budget and try and save money wherever possible.
And in that pursuit, I found this amazing resource – you can buy cheap used scientific lab equipment on Ebay. The products seemed cheap and had reasonably good warranties on them.
I was amazed.
So, I went ahead and ordered some optical posts for our lab.
I’ll receive them at the end of the week.
In short – I just saved my advisor about 1500$ in lab equipment.
Needless to say, everyone is happy.
P.S. If I were a tech entrepreneur in the Bay Area and was starting my own lab – I would imagine this would be a hell of a resource.
