Goal updates 2012 – Publishing paper

writing a paper

Today is the last day of 2012. And it’s time to address the goals I set early in the year. And set some new goals for 2013.

The problem with this one – writing a paper. I did write it. Well, I got almost an outline ready. But then got stuck.

We couldn’t explain the results we had in terms of a coherent theory. I needed to go back to the bench and do some more experiments. Which I’ve been procrastinating to do so far. Hopefully 2013 will be a better year for this.

Writing this paper has taught me a couple of things.

  1. Research doesn’t always works out as one thinks it will. I have two papers so far. But none as first author. Those are from my undergrad. And I realize that it’s easy when somebody else writes it. But when you have to do the hard work yourself, from start to finish, it takes more time than you think.
  2. Research doesn’t work linearly as I thought it did. It appears to me know that there is a huge amount of time spent figuring out protocols and making mistakes. If I actually knew what not to do, along with, exactly what to do, I could churn out a paper in 3 months. Sadly, this is not my level yet. I’m a beginner in this area.

I’m putting this goal again for 2013. Hopefully, I’ll crack this nut then.

Moving on..
