Goal updates 2012 – Publishing paper
Today is the last day of 2012. And it’s time to address the goals I set early in the year. And set some new goals for 2013.
The problem with this one – writing a paper. I did write it. Well, I got almost an outline ready. But then got stuck.
We couldn’t explain the results we had in terms of a coherent theory. I needed to go back to the bench and do some more experiments. Which I’ve been procrastinating to do so far. Hopefully 2013 will be a better year for this.
Writing this paper has taught me a couple of things.
- Research doesn’t always works out as one thinks it will. I have two papers so far. But none as first author. Those are from my undergrad. And I realize that it’s easy when somebody else writes it. But when you have to do the hard work yourself, from start to finish, it takes more time than you think.
- Research doesn’t work linearly as I thought it did. It appears to me know that there is a huge amount of time spent figuring out protocols and making mistakes. If I actually knew what not to do, along with, exactly what to do, I could churn out a paper in 3 months. Sadly, this is not my level yet. I’m a beginner in this area.
I’m putting this goal again for 2013. Hopefully, I’ll crack this nut then.
