A complete story.

theory-experiment-computation

I consider myself an experimentalist. It’s interesting I think that because both my published papers are on numerical simulations. But I think like an experimentalist and I aspire to be one.

However, there is a subtle interest I’ve noticed. Just doing blind experiments is not satisfying to me. Lately, I’ve been trying to understand the physics behind my experiments and attempting to describe them with a simple model.

Without a model or a theory, experiments can only describe one half of the story. To tell a good story, one needs both. And in two years, when I write my thesis, I intend to narrate as complete a story as I can.

Experience without theory is blind, but theory without experience is mere intellectual play. ~ I. Kant (?)

It would be so strange if Kant said that. He theorized boldly about murderers, painting, women, and natural disasters…all things he had no experience of whatsoever. But maybe then he can theorize just as boldly about experience itself. :-)
